Spring Maintenance: How to Achieve a Healthy Michigan Lawn

Here in Michigan, it’s a constant battle against the forces of nature to keep your lawn looking its best. Pests, weeds, and other factors are constantly at work trying to destroy your lawn. This spring, take proactive measures against these forces and take back control of your yard. Follow these spring lawn maintenance tips to help you make your Michigan lawn a healthy and vibrant lawn.

Grub Control

Grub Control protects your lawn from damage

Here in Michigan we are very familiar with grubs and the damage they can do. These little white worms are the larvae of June bugs. As they grow, they feed on the tender roots of your grass, causing it to turn yellow and die. Grubs are also a problem because they attract animals like moles, skunks, and birds that will dig up your lawn in search of these tasty worms. The key to effective grub control is to act early when you notice the signs and contact the professionals before it gets out of hand.

Weed Control

Weed control is one of the most important factors in spring lawn maintenance and achieving a beautiful yard. Nobody wants to look at a bunch of ugly crabgrass in their yard, including you.

Thankfully, there are preventative steps you can take to drastically reduce the amount of weeds in your yard and control weeds year round.

Pre-emergent control: Applied in the spring, pre-emergent herbicides work by forming a protective barrier over your yard that prevents weed seeds from germinating.

Spot Spray: As the seasons progress, keep weeds under control by targeting them with herbicide sprays.

Keep Your Grass Healthy: By following the above steps and in combination with proper fertilization and watering practices, your grass will become thick and healthy. The thick grass will prevent sunlight from reaching dormant seeds in your soil and will not germinate.

Of course, when you order lawn service from Custom Personalized Lawn Care we provide all three services at an unbeatable price.

Fertilizer

Keeping your grass healthy is key to effective weed control. The best time to fertilize is when temperature reach at least 50 degrees. Using a slow-release fertilizer will give your grass a steady amount of nutrients over a long period of time. At Custom Personalized Lawn Care, we offer fertilizer treatments combined with weed control to increase the health and defense of your lawn. Our experts take in factors like shade, climate, and soil composition to design a personalized fertilization schedule to feed your lawn throughout the year.

Perimeter Pest Control

There’s nothing worse than walking into your kitchen and finding a trail of ants leading right into your pantry. No matter how hard you try to seal your house there are still too many tiny spaces that insects can squeeze through. With perimeter pest control from Custom Personalized Lawn Care we can prevent insects from invading your home. Our technicians will apply a liquid coating of chemicals around the foundation of your house to keep out ants, beetles, spiders, and other insects.

Mosquito Control

If you are trying to throw the perfect wedding or backyard graduation party, the last thing you want is a bunch of mosquitos scaring your guests off. Mosquitos aren’t just annoying, they can also carry dangerous diseases. With our mosquito control program we can treat your yard year-round for mosquitos or call us for a one-time application before your big outdoor event.

As August heat lingers, many homeowners notice crabgrass popping up most often along sidewalks, driveways, and curbs. These edge areas are the perfect breeding ground for crabgrass—and there’s a reason behind it. Why the Edges Are Vulnerable Concrete absorbs heat all day and releases it back into the surrounding soil, driving temperatures much higher than the rest of your yard. Cool-season grasses don’t handle these hotter, drier spots well—but crabgrass does. By late summer, conditions are just right for it to grow and spread. What’s Going On With Your Lawn Spring protection fades: Pre-emergent products applied in spring slowly break down through sunlight, microbial activity, and heat. Around concrete, where the soil can be 10–15°F warmer, this process happens faster, leaving those areas more exposed by late summer. Stressed turf = open space: Grass near curbs and walkways often weakens in the heat, creating thin spots. Dormant crabgrass seeds lying in the soil for years can then germinate and fill in these gaps. Spreading risk: Once crabgrass gets established along the edges, it doesn’t stay put—it can move into healthy turf, making it a bigger challenge for next season. How Custom Personalized Lawn Care Responds Our late-summer treatments are designed to address these high-stress zones. We target the edges where crabgrass pressure is highest, support your grass during heat stress, and prepare your lawn for a smooth transition into fall growth. What You Can Do at Home Water border areas regularly during dry, hot weeks to relieve stress. Keep mower blades high when trimming near concrete—avoid cutting too short. Try not to disturb the soil along sidewalks and driveways, since that can bring dormant crabgrass seeds to the surface. By combining our professional care with these simple practices, you’ll reduce crabgrass pressure now and set your lawn up for healthier, stronger growth next year.
